The Midrash tells that at the beginning, the Sun and the Moon had the same dimensions, that God created them of the same size.
Just that one day, the prideful Moon went to complain to God about it.
God gave it right, rightfully - it wasn't possible for both celestial bodies to be of the same size....therefore He made the Moon smaller ... and from the "surplus" of material He made ....the Stars.
